    • Laptop computer skills for digital construction, rigging and animating characters.

    • Construction of props and environments with texture and lighting to complete the scene.

    • Camera, rendering and editing techniques to create a finished production.

Mohawk 3D Animation student Lavio Ribeiro Fidelis Neto has been announced as winner of the much coveted Ubisoft Toronto Live NEXT Awards, claiming 1st place winner in the Gameplay Animation category. Beating out all entrants from animation programs through out Ontario, Lavio will have a paid internship with Ubisoft Toronto. Ubisoft judge and Team Lead Animator Michael Rivera says Neto presents a great display of dynamic posing, body mechanics, and presentation of the character from start to finish, leading him to the first-place spot.

Admission

Domestic and International student admission requirements

  • OSSD or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading, GED) including:
    • Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
  • Students are required to purchase a specified laptop computer with software and art supply materials for use in the program. Accepted applicants will be notified of details regarding hardware and software purchases to include a digital drawing tablet.

Options are available for mature applicants.

Portfolio Submission

Preference will be given to applicants that submit a portfolio. Applicants who wish to submit a portfolio should follow the following guidelines

4 Drawings

Two Environment Pencil Drawings:

  • 1 Interior Drawing (Inside Room)
  • 1 Exterior Drawing (Outside Building)

Two Character Pencil Drawings:

  • 1 Realistic
  • 1 Cartoon or Fantasy

1 - Personal "Creative Statement" that addresses the questions below:

  • Why do you want to attend Mohawk College?
  • What strengths and skills do you bring with you?
  • How do you hope to benefit from attending Mohawk College?

Guidelines

  • Applicants may submit their portfolio using the online portfolio submission form.
  • No work should be submitted in its original form; only photographic / scan documentation (digital files) of work should be submitted. Acceptable file types include: .pdf,.jpg,.jpeg.
  • The size of each file should be no larger than 2.5 MB.
  • The Creative Statement should be a pdf file from a word or text document.
  • All work must be clearly labeled with applicant's name. Each digital image file must be identified with your name and title / description, e.g. ...
    1. 1_firstname_lastname_Environment_real_exterior.jpg
    2. 2_firstname_lastname_Character_imaginative.jpg
  • Traditional illustrations (e.g. paper-based drawings), it is strongly recommended that a good quality scanner is used to produce digital files.
  • Use of a digital camera should only be used in a situation where the traditional illustration exceeds the scanners size limitations.
  • Be sure to check your photographic documentation or scan for correct colour balance, focus and to ensure your files clearly represent the original work.

The quality of your submissions will greatly impact the portfolio review portion in the acceptance process.

Experiential Learning

How you'll gain skills

  • Produce a portfolio exhibit in front of an audience.
  • Participate in real-world projects with partners both inside and outside the college, such as Alectra Utilities, and Mohawk College City School.
  • Using state-of-the art software and hardware, learn the entire animation process from start to finish, including scriptwriting, preproduction (design, storyboarding, drawing skills, and cinematics) creating and rigging characters and 3D animation.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.

Laptop Program

A PC laptop is mandatory. Apple MacBook Pro is NOT recommended. If you currently own a laptop that meets our minimum standard and is capable of running the required software, a new purchase will not be required.

Mohawk College has a partnership with Dell. Once fall products have been released, early summer, Mohawk's Custom Online store will offer educational discounts. Here is how you can access our custom online store: Log into your MyMohawk account. Click on the Technology Solutions tab and navigate to the Computer Store section.

Minimum Requirements:

  • minimum requirement Windows 10 operating system (for best performance of animation software)
  • 15" to 17" monitor
  • 1 TB hard drive, 8 GBs of RAM (minimum), running on a i7 quad core processor
    • Your PC will require the latest HD Graphics Card that is Autodesk recommended.
    • Professors use and recommend nVidia GTX GeForce cards.
    • When purchasing a laptop please ensure your device meets the Autodesk Certified Hardware specs and that the graphics card on the PC is Autodesk compatible. View list of certified graphics cards PDF.
