New Program Streams

We now offer the opportunity to apply on your preferred instrument/voice to our Applied Music Program.

Applicants may apply to only one Music Stream (contemporary or classical) and one instrument major on the OCAS application. However, any applicants that are unsure to what stream they align we can discuss this at your audition. Also, if you play an additional instrument mention this during your audition and you may be given further instruction at that time. There may be opportunities to play additional instruments during your studies in ensemble classes.

Admission

Domestic and International student admission requirements

  • OSSD or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading, GED) including:
    • Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
    • Background in Music
  • Audition on your instrument or voice, a theory test, and an ear-training test
  • Applicant acceptance will be based on ability and talent in a principal instrument or voice

Option are available for mature applicants.

Applicant Audition Guide

Application

Apply to our Applied Music Program through the Ontario College Application Services (OCAS) (opens new window) website and follow the steps as instructed by OCAS (opens new window).

After you submit your application through OCAS, you will receive a package in the mail containing the following:

Packages will be sent out the first week of December for those who have applied prior to this date. Thereafter, packages will be distributed approximately two weeks after we have received your application.

Additional Items & Required Submissions

Your acknowledgment package will contain an RSVP postcard. This postcard will contain information regarding how to submit your preferred audition date. Please see “audition dates” below for more information.

If you did not receive an email it could mean one of the following:

  • We have not received your online RSVP
  • You are on a waitlist for an audition
  • Please send any inquiries you may have to the Music Department at: music.auditions [at] mohawkcollege.ca

Audition Dates

We will be hosting auditions on the following dates:
February 23rd, 24th, March 30th, and March 31st.

  • Your tentative audition date/time and other important information will be sent by email to your MyMohawk email account. 
  • You must confirm your audition date and time by replying to our email, by the date specified. 
  • Information regarding access to your MyMohawk can be located on your Acknowledgement letter. If you need assistance, check out the MyMohawk Guides webpage. 
  • In the event that we receive a high volume of applicants for the same instrument major you may be placed on a waitlist. It is your responsibility, to ensure that you check your MyMohawk account for any email correspondence we may send to you. If you utilize another email account, please indicate this on your online RSVP. 
  • Audition slots are limited for each instrument major. Auditions are scheduled on a first come first serve basis. You are not guaranteed an audition. 
  • If you did not receive an email it could mean one of the following: 
    • We have not received your online RSVP 
    • You are on a waitlist for an audition

What to expect

Audition

  • Your audition will be approximately 20 minutes in length.
  • If your audition is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. or later, you will write your theory test prior to your performance audition. If your audition is scheduled before 11:00 a.m. you will write the theory test after your audition.
  • Practice rooms will be available on a first come, first serve basis for those wishing to warm up before their audition.

Theory Test

  • Applicants must receive a minimum grade of 70% in order to pass the Theory Test.
  • If you have a Royal Conservatory Level 4 Certificate, you can be exempt from writing the theory test. However, you must present the original copy of your certificate on the day of your audition.

  • Prospective students are encouraged to attend an informal individual Q&A session with our faculty: This is your opportunity to learn about our program, our internship opportunities, how our program can help you achieve your future career goals, and learn more about our articulation agreements.

Offers of Admission

Once auditions are complete, only those applicants, who receive an offer of admission or those who are placed on a waitlist, can expect to receive notification. This will be communicated through OCAS within two weeks from the audition date.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.
