    • Construction of props and environments with texture and lighting to complete the scene.

    • Camera, rendering and editing techniques to create a finished production.

Program Length

3 academic years (periods of 8 months)

The two-year Graphic Design Production - Integrated Animation (257) program has been replaced by the three-year Animation 3D (373) program.

Admission

Domestic and International student admission requirements

  • OSSD or equivalent (Mohawk Academic Upgrading, GED) including:
    • Grade 12 English, C or U or equivalent
  • Students are required to purchase a specified laptop computer with software and art supply materials for use in the program. Accepted applicants will be notified of details regarding hardware and software purchases to include a digital drawing tablet.

Option are available for mature applicants.

Portfolio Submission

Preference will be given to applicants that submit a portfolio. Applicants who wish to submit a portfolio should follow the following guidelines

4 Drawings

Two Environment Pencil Drawings:

  • 1 Interior Drawing (Inside Room)
  • 1 Exterior Drawing (Outside Building)

Two Character Pencil Drawings:

  • 1 Realistic
  • 1 Cartoon or Fantasy

1 - Personal "Creative Statement" that addresses the questions below:

  • How do you hope to benefit from attending Mohawk College?

Guidelines

  • Image submissions are to be submitted electronically using the Mohawk College online portfolio submission process located on our website.
  • No work should be submitted in its original form; only photographic / scan documentation (digital files) of work should be submitted. Acceptable file types include: .pdf,.jpg,.jpeg.
  • The size of each file should be no larger than 2.5 MB.
  • The Creative Statement should be a pdf file from a word or text document.
  • All work must be clearly labeled with applicant's name. Each digital image file must be identified with your name and title / description, e.g. ...

    2. 2_firstname_lastname_Character_imaginative.jpg
  • Traditional illustrations (e.g. paper-based drawings), it is strongly recommended that a good quality scanner is used to produce digital files.
  • Use of a digital camera should only be used in a situation where the traditional illustration exceeds the scanners size limitations.
  • Be sure to check your photographic documentation or scan for correct colour balance, focus and to ensure your files clearly represent the original work.

The quality of your submissions will greatly impact the portfolio review portion in the acceptance process.

  • Using state-of-the art software and hardware, learn the entire animation process from start to finish, including scriptwriting, preproduction (design, storyboarding, drawing skills, and cinematics) creating and rigging characters and 3D animation.

Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes, often referred to as ‘Program Standards', set out the essential learning that a student must achieve before being deemed ready to graduate.

In many cases these program learning outcomes were developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) in consultation with employers and educators who are experts in the program field. To ensure the outcomes remain current and in line with industry needs, we invite our employers, graduates working in the field and current students to re-examine and update them during regular, ongoing program review focus groups.

Laptop Program

A PC laptop is mandatory. Apple MacBook Pro is NOT recommended. If you currently own a laptop that meets our minimum standard and is capable of running the required software, a new purchase will not be required.

Mohawk College has a partnership with Dell. Once fall products have been released, early summer, Mohawk's Custom Online store will offer educational discounts. Here is how you can access our custom online store: Log into your MyMohawk account. Click on the Technology Solutions tab and navigate to the Computer Store section.

Minimum Requirements:

  • minimum requirement Windows 7, with Windows 10 being the recommendation
  • 15" to 17" monitor
  • 1 TB hard drive, 8 GBs of RAM (minimum) , running on a i7 quad core processor
  • Latest HD graphics card that is Autodesk recommended (e.g. nVidia 2000m); please check out Autodesk compatible graphic cards (opens new window)

Highly Recommended:

  • Have available or purchase a 1TB removable hard drive to backup software and files (Approx. $75)
  • USB Flash Drive (Approx. $25)
  • Standard USB Mouse

Software Requirements - You will need to purchase the following

Adobe CS6 Production Premium - PC Version

  • This suite is bundled to contain the software you will need for your two years of studies. It is important that every student have their own licensed copy.
  • This software is available direct from Adobe either as a buy outright (approx. $650) Or for approx. $22 per month you can access the Adobe Creative Cloud online, which gives you access to all the Adobe Programs you will need.
  • The Adobe software is also available from retailers such as Tiger Direct.

Autodesk Education Suite for Entertainment Creation

  • The 3DS Max, Mudbox, etc. programs are provided by download at Mohawk College during first semester and conforms to the educational licensing agreement with Autodesk.
  • This software is industry standard for animation and gaming creation.
