Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory for international students and is offered through Mohawk College's insurance provider, GuardMe. You cannot opt out of this coverage. The cost of health insurance is already included in your tuition and fees.

Getting your health insurance information

  • You will receive a welcome email from GuardMe during the last week of your first month of classes (September, January or May, depending on your intake).
  • This email will be sent to your Mohawk College email account and will include instructions on how to log in to your GuardMe portal.

How to download your Healthcare Access Card

  1. Visit the GuardMe portal.
  2. Log in with your Mohawk email (first and last name).
  3. Complete the two-factor verification (a code will be sent to your Mohawk email).
  4. Download your Healthcare Access Card.

Important: If you need your health insurance card before receiving the email (for example, in a medical emergency), please contact international.services [at] mohawkcollege.ca (international[dot]services[at]mohawkcollege[dot]ca) with the name of the doctor or hospital requesting it.

GuardMe does not send physical cards. You will need to download your digital card.

 

Frequently Asked Questions - GuardMe Insurance

What if I arrive before my classes start?

If you will arrive in Canada before your program start date, you can apply and pay for additional medical insurance directly through the GuardMe Portal.

Can I apply for a family member?

Yes, if your family members are living in Canada with you, it is strongly recommended that you purchase coverage for them as well.

  • This insurance can be purchased directly through GuardMe.
  • After logging in, select “Add a dependent.”

What if I take a break from studies?

If you are taking one semester off and returning to school after the break, you are eligible to buy coverage online for the gap period between semesters. You have only 10 days from the expiry date of your latest GuardMe policy to apply for coverage for the gap period.

If you miss the deadline, you will not be eligible to apply for coverage for the gap period.

What happens to my coverage after I graduate?

As a recent graduate student, you are eligible to apply for coverage. You must apply within 30 days of your GuardMe policy expiry date.

Extended Health & Dental Insurance (MSA Insurance) 

In addition to GuardMe, all full-time international students have access to the extended health and dental coverage through the Mohawk Students’ Association (MSA). 

This coverage includes:

  • Dental care
  • Vision care
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Other extended health services

If students want to add a spouse or dependent(s), students may opt in their family during the Change of Coverage period in their first academic semester of the policy. To find more information on this, visit Couple & Family Enrolments. 

On-Campus Health Services

Medical care is readily available for students at Mohawk College. Visit the Health and Wellness Centre at Fennell Campus, Room C109, for care and support.
